Why I Won't Watch American Idol Anymore

Whether to watch American Idol from the beginning can be a controversy all it’s own, but I am speaking as a fan who has followed every season, voted with my phone almost every episode, and then voted with my money as I bought the music that came from the show. A fan who has decided to quit the show for good. I think it is a show with a good premise that has become weighed down by the judges.
I am an avid music fan and love to find good music. I have always felt like American Idol gave a chance to talented people in a very competitive industry but after this season I’m not so sure anymore. I’m not so sure it’s about the talented singers but the judges.
The criticism of the singers has always been there but this year it seemed to spike. The controversial “fourth judge” just made the bickering more noticeable as there was attack after attack on her. After coming home from a hard day and wanting something inspiring to watch I found the judges’ self centered comments sickening. I felt weighed down with cynicism. I realized that I wasn’t supporting these undiscovered talents as much as I was supporting a few self centered critics. I found myself thinking would I want to watch the movie or the movie critics talk about the movie?
I decided I wanted more out of life than to listen to people complain. Sure, I’ll miss the good singers, but what I’ve found already as I missed this season’s finale is that my vote DOES count. It has already counted in the quality of my own life. There is plenty of things to watch that don’t encourage put downs. I had already voted ‘no’ on Survivor--that was a vote for ‘no' on lying and yes’ on integrity. And now this week I vote ‘no’ on self centered bickering and ‘yes’ on shows that inspire. I feel like I just gained back a few extra hours to my week and that feels good. I’m excited to see what I’ll be able to accomplish without American Idol weighing me down.
