This is a petri dish where S has grown some bacteria that she swabbed from her hand. Besides doing this and reading the books The Hot Zone and Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston, it has made us very germ conscious.
I've always wished my kids would have a science fair so those green things growing in my fridge would be good for something. GROSS! If I knew the kinds of grossness growing all around me I'd be obsessive compulsive in a split second! But it is awesome to learn about, if I could separate the two in my mind. We have a friend in the branch studying to be a Physician's Assistant and he admits that he washes his hands alll the time now.
